Year: 2000
Location: Massachusetts Institute of Technology's largest computer science and artificial intelligence lab
Bruce Cheng, President of Delta Electronics, queried the computer screen, "I want to return to Taiwan, are there any flights?" The computer replied, "When will you go, morning, afternoon or evening?" Bruce said, "I plan to take a flight after 5pm tomorrow." The computer immediately listed several flight schedules and suggested taking the 2nd flight. Taking the 1st flight would be rushed, and there might be a traffic jam.
Bruce was surprised at the answers and tried to find if anyone was hidden under the computer since the replies were so comprehensive. And then Bruce also asked about the weather in Taiwan.
Joint MIT Oxygen project
From 2000 to 2005, Delta developed natural computer system jointly with MIT in the Oxygen project. The mission of the project was that technology should as be easy to use as breathing oxygen. The most exciting area was speech recognition. The Oxygen project involved two thirds of the professors at MIT's biggest laboratory for computer science and artificial intelligence. There were six leading companies that joined the project: Nokia, Philips, HP, NTT, Acer and Delta.
Through its cooperation with MIT, Delta got into a software service area to develop a technology and market that was totally different from Delta's experience.
